Fort de Hel temporarily closed
Fort de Hel, one of our favorite forts in the Defense of Willemstad, is closed, due to a change in the management and operation of the fort. When the fort reopens is still unknown. Are you planning a cycling tour through our region in the coming period? Then please keep in mind that you cannot visit Fort de Hel temporarily.
Fort de Hel is one of the five forts in the Defense of Willemstad, also called the Defence Line of the rivers Hollandsch Diep and Volkerak. The fort, dating back to 1811, is located in the outskirts of fortified Willemstad, by the riverside Volkerak and right next to the Sabina Henrica polder. In recent years, the fortress has been a historical and cultural place where you could enjoy regional dishes and other delicacies.
Bicycle routes change
Several bicycle and hiking tours mention the fort as a resting place and restaurant. Because the fort is not expected to stay closed for long, we will not adjust our tours for the time being. Are you planning to cycle our Ruigenhil Polder or Flood Disaster route soon? Then, please keep in mind that the fort is closed until at least July 6, 2022. For a break and a place to eat, you have the detour option to the adjacent Fort Sabina via bicycle route junction 60.
Fort de Hel is also a well-known stopping place with a restaurant on other cycling and hiking routes. This is certainly the case for the Zuiderwaterlinie (The Southern Waterline) hiking route 4, for the Defense of Willemstad bicycle route (by ANWB (automobile association)), and the Floris V walk, a long-distance hiking trail of 244.5 kilometers from Amsterdam to Bergen op Zoom.
