Hop-on hop-off through the Defense of Willemstad
Free of charge through the Defense of Willemstad
Tour the Defense of Willemstad free of charge
This year, visitors have the opportunity once again to travel through the Defense of Willemstad free of charge with our shuttle service. The hop-on hop-off service runs every Wednesday through Sunday, starting on July 9 and ending on September 5, 2022. Possibly, this service extends to weekends in September.
Stops
The shuttle bus stops at three locations: Visitor Center Mauritshuis, downtown Willemstad (near city harbor), and Fort Sabina. Due to the temporary closure, the stop at Fort De Hel will temporarily be out of service. However, should the fort open its doors this season, we will adjust the schedule, and the shuttle bus will also stop at this fort.
Timetable
Do your guests like to travel with this hop-on, hop-off service? Reservations are not required. Visitors can wait for the shuttle bus at one of the three stops. The actual timetable can be found on www.visitmoerdijk.nl and at the various stops. The timetable will be communicated in early July. Would you like to send your guests off well-prepared and equipped with the timetable, and you can't find it? Then please contact Visit Moerdijk via visit@moerdijk.nl.
Defense of Willemstad
The Defense of Willemstad consists of five forts and two fortified towns altogether: Willemstad and Klundert. Because of the distance between the two fortified towns, the shuttle bus only runs in the vicinity of Willemstad. Yet, Klundert is also a great place to spend some time. Visitors can obtain information about their visit at The Mauritshuis visitor center and the tourist information point in Klundert.
Fort Buitensluis
On the other side of the river Hollands Diep, visitors can find Fort Buitensluis in Numansdorp. This season, this fort opens its doors every second weekend of the month from 1 pm to 4 pm. This fort is easily accessible via Haringvliet Bridge. Unfortunately, the ferry service Anna does not sail to Numansdorp this year. We hope that this ferry service will be in service again next year.
Fort Bovensluis and Fort Prince Frederik
Fort Bovensluis is currently part of the former camping site Bovensluis. This campsite has been closed down and taken over by a developer. The fort and the former campsite await a major refurbishment. For that reason, the fort is currently closed and not accessible to the public. Meanwhile, at Fort Frederik (Goeree-Overflakkee), workers are putting in every effort to make this fort accessible to the public in the future.
The local authority of Moerdijk initiative
The shuttle service is an initiative of the Moerdijk local authority, allowing our visitors to extend their visit from the Defense Line to other locations. We hope that your guests will also enjoy our entire region!
