Museum attic of local history club “De Willemstad”
In the attic of Het Mauritshuis in Willemstad, the local history club “De Willemstad” displays its extensive permanent collection of thousands of local objects, old photographs, and maps. Extraordinary aspects of Willemstad's history are shown in period room settings such as a store, school, workshop, kitchen, living room, and a thematic corner on fishing and agriculture. Typical collections are displayed in various showcases.
Museum Zevenbergen
In Museum Zevenbergen of the local history club “Willem van Strijen”, you can discover how historical life in the old sugar city took place. In “De Oudheidskamer” (House of antiquities), as the museum is called, you can find a store, old crafts, documents, household attributes, tools, pottery, and much more. All this is located on a so-called indoor farm from the 18th century.
Besides a visit to this great museum, the local history club offers guided tours in “De Oudheidskamer” for groups of up to 30 people. On request, the club organizes lectures about the former castle, the city wall, the Lords van Zevenbergen, the sugar industry in Zevenbergen, and the canals. This is often combined with coffee and tea, including a genuine Zevenbergen pastry, as it was served around 1900.
National Flax and Sugar Museum Klundert
Visit the National Flax and Sugar Museum in Klundert and discover how flax is processed into linen. Or marvel at the story about the origin of the sugar beet, which played a significant role in the western region of Brabant and still does.
For centuries, people in the western part of North Brabant have been cultivating the raw material flax for the production of flax ribbon, linen, or linseed oil and sugar beet for the production of sugar. The Flax Factory and Sugar Museum is located in the middle of this area, in the fortified town of Klundert. Of the hundreds of raw material processing facilities, only the sugar factory remains, which is unique. The museum takes you on a discovery voyage from past to present. Join us! Special arrangements can be booked for groups.
Flood disaster museum Heijningen
In Heijningse Veluwestraat, you can find the Swedish wooden Flood Disaster house donated by the Swedish people in 1953 as a replacement for the destroyed homes during the 1953 flood disaster. The complete restoration in 2012 brought the house back to its original state, and the original interior in the 50s style makes this house unique in the world! The flood house contains a permanent exhibition about the storm disaster in Heijningen and greater Moerdijk. You can also find information about other parts of the flood disaster area in the southwest of the Netherlands.
Check the museum’s website for opening hours.
